Canadian Sperber owner

  • Hi, my first post here. I'm Tim from Ottawa Canada. I just got a 1969 Sperber that seems pretty complete. It'll be a n easy project to get going over the winter here. Simson is very uncommon in Canada. This is the first one I've ever seen, so I had to buy it. She does have some needs so I am glad I found this forum. Hard parts to find are the motor covers and handlebar switches and covers that I need. I got good spark and lots of compression so when the carburation is dealt with she'll run. I'll be spending a lot of time here learning as much as I can about this neat little bike. thanks for all the invaluable info!

  • Thank you for the welcome. The bike seems to have been imported to the U.S. in 1990 and transfered to Canada in 2000. I have a lot of paperwork dating back to the DDR. All legal paperwork seems to be in order so I should be able to put her on the road legally when I get to that point. I don' think it has ever been regististered for road use in North America before. She's in real nice original condition with a few parts gone missing. I'll try to get some pictures up as soon as I can figure out how : ) I am not very good with the computer.

  • A friend of mine bought a Bimota YB8 and a Bultaco Metralla (he's rich-not me LOL). When he was making that deal he saw the Simson and thought I might like it,so he picked it up as well. When I went to his place to see his new finds he pointed to the Simson and asked if I'd be interested in it. I loved it right away and brought her home. She's in my living room! Ya, I'm single. I have never heard of the brand before. I've collected and sold many British and Italian bikes over the years but have never come across one of these. I'm looking foreward to getting this little bike on the road.

  • So, I think you are a lucky man. It could be, that this bike is the only one in northern america.

In Germany Simson is maybe the famoust bike for youth and those who drove it when they were young. It is the only 50 ccm bike that young people man drive legally by 60 km/h, others only toll 50 km/h.

The history of Simson is very interresting. Do you know about it?

  • I'm 61 years old and have ridden motorcycles for over 40 years. Started on Kawasaki and Can Am off roaders. There was never a large market for 50cc bikes in my province, Ontario. The laws always seem to dicourage small bikes and mopeds. For some reason people are getting interested in them now. I hope I come across more Simsons when it's on the road. And yes, I have been looking up Simson history. An interesting company for sure. A very neat line of bikes for many years as well! I've been taking my little Sperber apart and putting it back together so I can get more used to it. It is a very well made machine! It's going to be fun!

  • These mopeds were made to run und run and run.
In the former GDR every material was raw. The idea was, that every vehicle and every thing else should live longer than in Western Germany. Now the youth is happy about the bikes and they are tuning the mopeds heavy. The police often stops Simson-Drivers, because it is not seldom that te bikes run 80 or 90 km/h or even more.

The older, linke me, are happy about every original sparepart and restaurate the mopeds, with lot of love. So much of uns began to collect the bikes and we have a Lot of classic-fans and if Corona is quit, so I think there will be conventions again.

Some years ago it started to be an own culture to have an old vehicle of the former GDR. Sparaparts became more and more expansive, when they are original, because the quality often ist better, than some china-products.

It is real cool to know, there is a Sperber in Canada!
